Further along and holding the coast line we come to the Holy Island causeway, weve already planned the timing so the tide is out and we cross over to Holy Island, the home of Christianity in England ,where we take a short break for refreshments and you will be able to sample the famous Lindisfarne mead in one of the local shops.. Refreshed and raring to go, we now head inland riding through the beautiful Cheviot hills to Wooler. The countryside around this area is some of the most spectacular in all of England. When we get to Chillingham castle take a good look because this 12 century strong hold is reputed to be the most haunted castle in Britain. | Interesting Facts about your tour Alnwick Castle Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309, making this year the 700 year anniversary, Alnwick castle was used in the filming of 'Harry Potter' as 'Hogworts'.. Sea Houses Seahouses developed as a result of its natural harbour and the fishing industry that grew up around it. In recent years the fishing industry has declined but the townscape, language, industries and character of Seahouses still reflect its maritime origins Bamburgh Castle Bamburgh Castle stands on a massive, 180-foot high basalt crag, giving all-round views of the coast and surrounding countryside. At first no more than a wooden fortification around a Royal Saxon City (Bebbanburh - named after Bebba, wife of the Saxon ruler Ethelfrith) which was over-run and sacked by the Danes in 993, the castle was first built in stone by the Normans in the 12th centaury. Impregnable until the 15th century, it eventually came under cannon fire during the Wars of the Roses and fell after a 9-month siege. Holy Island Lindisfarne Still a place of pilgrimage even in these more secular times, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is the very fountainhead of England's Christian heritage. It was on Holy Island that the early Christian message was honed and distributed to a largely pagan Northumberland. Lindisfarne Priory was the home of St Cuthbert and the birthplace of a true national treasure - the Lindisfarne Gospels, a unique illuminated Latin manuscript of the gospels of Mark, Luke and John. Holy Island is only accessable along the causeway depending upon the tide. Chillingham Castle This 12th century stronghold ,reputed to be the most haunted castle in the world became 'base-camp' for the 1298 conquering attack on William Wallace by “Hammer of the Scots”, King Edward 1st. Wallace had raided the previous year, burning the women and children to death in the local abbey. The Castle was given permission to add battlements by King Edward III in 1344 (See the actual License in the Castle). The Elizabethans added 'Long Galleries' and Capability Brown designed the park in 1752. |
